eMBEDDED LEARNING™ Mini-Studies

Mini-Study
Important components of the eMBEDDED LEARNING™ Model are classroom application projects. Mini-studies are action research projects applied in the classroom with six students (two from the top, middle, and low tiers based on assessment data) where the teachers must follow the model for effective instruction. This includes pre-assessment screening; differentiated instruction; post assessment to gauge effectiveness of instruction; reflection and analysis to see what should be done differently; what was effective and should be celebrated and collaborating and sharing with their coach and colleagues. The mini-study focuses not only on assessment, but on developing an appropriate instructional response/intervention based on assessment results and ongoing monitoring to determine if the response is effective.

Below are the key features:
  • Appropriate assessments for the topic of the mini-study are identified. In some cases, the teacher has the option of using something from his/her own district or of his/her own choosing.
  • Assessment results are recorded in the Student Assessment Data Sheet.
  • An appropriate response/intervention is determined by the teacher for each student in the mini-study and recorded in the Instructional Response Chart, which is part of the Student Assessment Data Sheet.
  • Progress monitoring occurs over the next two weeks to determine how the instruction is working.
  • During the mini-study discussion activity, each teacher will upload his/her entire Student Assessment Data Sheet, containing assessment and instruction information on all 6 students in the study. However, he/she will be asked to focus on one student, discuss the student's needs based on the assessment results and discuss how instruction/intervention was planned to match the needs of the students.
  • Other learners can give ideas on the match-up between assessment results and instruction.
  • The facilitator can look at all data and instructional responses for all 6 students for each teacher by examining the Student Assessment Data Sheet and make suggestions to the teacher.
Below is the portion of the Student Assessment Data Sheet related to Phonological Awareness from the eMBEDDED LEARNING™ course "Word Study K-3."

Based on research, the eMBEDDED LEARNING™ Model is designed to be the most effective form of professional development.
