The course begins with a review of the core beliefs and guiding principles about coaching. In Coaching I learners apply change theory and adult learning theory to differentiate coaching for adult learners. Through this course, learners develop a repertoire of communication skills to build relationships with teachers and administrators. This course also offers practical experiences in using coaches strategies for goal setting, creating schedules and documenting coaching efforts to affect change and student learning. Coaches learn how to set goals aligned with the school improvement planning process and view examples of expert coaches modeling coaching with teachers. By the end of the course, coaches have a well developed plan for implementing coaching in their building or refining their existing plan.
Coaching I is appropriate for experienced coaches and teachers who are considering moving into a coaching position in the future. The course consists of the following sections:
Unit 1: Introduction—Overview of Course
Unit 2: Introduction to Instructional Coaching
Unit 3: Adult Learning
Unit 4: Implementing Instructional Coaching
Unit 5: Culminating Activity
